International Marine Mammal Project
Dolphin Safe Tuna Monitoring Program
As everyone is well aware tuna nets are a common killer of dolphins and other marine life. Earth Island's monitoring program keeps the "Dolphin Safe" label honest by regularly inspecting tuna in canneries, dockside, and on fishing vessels. To find out more about the program go here:

Blackfish
Synopsis
Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.
This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite.
The Movement
When Dawn Brancheau was attacked and killed by Tilikum, Gabriela Cowperthwaite decided it was time to investigate and make Sea World's secrets known. What Gabriela discovered was a long, terrible past and present for killer whales in captivity. She learned what many orca researchers had been preaching for years, but it was clear that just preaching and websites weren't going to have a very big audience. She needed to do something big to get the public to realize just what is going on and why a killer whale would want to kill a human, especially a happy whale. Therefore: Blackfish was created.
Blackfish first started getting played in Sundance Film Festivals around the world and then hit theaters mid 2013 where it made waves. After the film had made it into theaters CNN began airing it continuously. It still gets played today. This reached such a massive audience that the "Blackfish Effect" was created. Many people began opposing Sea World and the captivity of killer whales to the point that the huge corporation felt forced to make many PR attempts to clear their name and deny Blackfish's claims, but it would appear that there is nothing they can do when so many people are starting to learn for themselves just what they are trying to hide.
Because of Blackfish an Assemblyman in California, Richard Bloom, is now trying to pass a bill that will ban killer whale captivity for entertainment reasons called AB2140. The documentary has reached such a wide audience that it feels as if the end of captivity for orcas could possibly be in sight. Spreading the word and staying educated is the best thing that you can do in helping with this movement. Share this movie with as many people as you can.

Empty The Tanks Worldwide
What It's About
Empty the Tanks is a global campaign against the holding of marine mammals in captivity for entertainment reasons. The site makes a 'call to arms' of sorts around the world every year to protest at any and all parks that keep performing captive marine mammals. The worldwide protest happens once a year and also takes that time to educate the general public on keeping whales and dolphins in captivity as well as the Taiji drive hunt where large amounts of these wonderful animals are slaughtered just so that they can sell a few to aquariums around the world.

The Taiji Dolphin Drive
The Movement
The Taiji Drive Hunt begins on September 1st and proceeds through April, or further. The animals are driven to a cove that has infamously been named The Cove where they pick out the ones they want to sell and slaughter the others. The slaughter results in the deaths of 800 - 2,000 individuals every year while over 100 dolphins and whales are caught to be sold at marine parks at the same time. Not only are these numbers massive hits to dolphin and whale populations, but the act of killing the creatures are so inhumane that it's hard to watch the video. Despite what they may have you think, the method does not give the animals an instant death.
The fishermen insist that it is a long standing tradition, but records have indicated that it is far from a tradition, the slaughter starting only 45 years ago as opposed to the 400 they claim. A very well known advocate by the name of Ric O'barry made a documentary on the Taiji slaughter called The Cove which spread the word of the event like wildfire. Along with Ric, Sea Shepherd also protests every year at the site and even has a branch specifically dedicated to the movement called the Cove Guardians.
